A birth date is enough. Saturn moves too slowly for the time of day to matter.

One crossing or three

For a few months each year Saturn appears to move backwards (retrograde). If that loop happens over your natal point, Saturn crosses it, backs over it and crosses it again. Five birth dates, computed with the same ephemeris the readings use, ages at each crossing:

BornFirst returnSecondThird
1 Oct 197929.1, 29.4, 29.859.088.1, 88.5, 88.8
20 Jul 198528.5, 28.8, 29.258.387.4, 87.8, 88.2
15 Mar 199029.858.9, 59.4, 59.788.8
1 Jan 199629.158.287.4, 87.6, 88.1
5 Nov 200129.658.7, 59.1, 59.488.6

The first return landed between 28.5 and 29.9 in these five. Whether yours is one crossing or three changes from one return to the next, so a single-pass first return says nothing about the second.

Western: the review

Western astrology reads Saturn as structure, limits and time. Its return is read as a review of what was built in the first cycle: what holds, what was borrowed from other people’s expectations, and what has to go. The first return gets most of the attention because it is the first time anything in the chart has come full circle on that scale.

Worth saying plainly: the late twenties are a crowded time anyway. Jobs, cities and relationships settle or break around then for reasons that need no planet. A Saturn return reading earns its place only when it says something specific enough to be wrong, with a date on it. House Call readings carry dated predictions and record how they turn out; see how predictions are checked.

Vedic: same planet, other clocks

Your natal Saturn may sit in a different sign in the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac, for the reason explained in why the charts disagree. The return does not move. It is Saturn measured against itself, and both positions shift by the same ayanamsa, so the sidereal return lands within a couple of weeks of the tropical one.

Jyotish gives its attention to two other Saturn clocks. Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is Saturn’s passage through the sign before your natal Moon’s, the Moon’s own sign and the sign after. At Saturn’s average pace of 2.5 years a sign that is about 7.4 years, and it comes round roughly every 29. It is tied to the Moon, not to Saturn’s own position, so it only overlaps the return when your natal Saturn sits within a sign of your natal Moon.

The other is the Saturn Mahadasha, 19 of the 120 years in the Vimshottari Dasha cycle. When it starts depends on the Moon’s nakshatra at birth: for some people in childhood, for others past 100, which means never in practice. A House Call reading names your current dasha and when it turns; it is the backbone of the Vedic timing (more in Vedic astrology explained).

BaZi: no Saturn at all

BaZi does not use planets. It has no Saturn and nothing returns to a birth position. Its long clock is the ten-year luck pillar. The first one starts at an age set by your own chart, worked out from how many days separate your birth from the nearest solar-term boundary (three days count as a year), and a new pillar follows every ten years after that.

So everyone changes luck pillar once in each decade of life, at their own age. For some that change falls within a year or two of the Saturn return; for others it is five years away. The year pillar also repeats every 60 years, which puts its return at 60, right beside the second Saturn return. More on the system in BaZi (Four Pillars) explained and the Day Master guide.

When they line up

Three traditions, three clocks that run independently. Most of the time they point at different years. When a Saturn return, a dasha change and a new luck pillar fall in the same window, a House Call reading says so and gives that window more weight. When they do not, it prints what each one says instead of blending them. The sample reading shows what that looks like on a real chart.

Common questions

When is my Saturn return?

Saturn takes 29.5 years to go round the Sun, so the first return falls between about 28 and 30, the second between about 58 and 60 and the third between about 87 and 89. The finder on this page gives the exact dates from a birth date.

How long does a Saturn return last?

The exact crossing is a single day when Saturn passes its natal position once. When retrograde motion carries it back over the point, there are three crossings, and in the charts measured here the first and last were up to about nine months apart.

Is there a Saturn return in Vedic astrology?

The same return happens on the same dates in the sidereal zodiac, give or take a couple of weeks. Jyotish pays more attention to Saturn's passage over the natal Moon, called Sade Sati, and to the Saturn Mahadasha, a 19-year period whose timing depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

Does Chinese astrology have a Saturn return?

No. BaZi does not use planets. Its long timing unit is the ten-year luck pillar, which begins at an age set by your own chart, so a new pillar starts once in every decade of life and sometimes lands close to the Saturn return.
