What it is
Jyotish ("light of the stars") is the Indian astrological tradition. It uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed to the stars, drifting against the seasonal/tropical zodiac by about 24° today) rather than the tropical one used by Western astrology. The sign your sun is "in" usually shifts back by one sign in Vedic.
Janma Nakshatra (birth-star)
The Moon at your birth falls in one of 27 lunar mansions, each 13°20' wide and ruled by a deity and a planet. This is the single most important Vedic personality marker: finer-grained than the Moon-sign and culturally rich. One example is Shatabhisha ("100 healers," Rahu-ruled: a quiet, deep, research-style signature).
Vimshottari Dasha
The most accurate timing system any astrology offers. Your life is divided into a sequence of Mahadashas (planetary "great periods"), each lasting 6 to 20 years, in a fixed order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus. The exact starting period and length depend on the Moon's position at your birth.
Each Mahadasha has sub-periods (Antardashas) ruled by one of the nine planets. So if you're in Saturn Mahadasha and Saturn-Mercury Antardasha, the felt-texture of your life right now is Saturn-shaped overall, with a Mercury-shaped flavour in this sub-window.
What it does well
Timing: when something happens, not just what happens. Spiritual and inner themes. The "long arc" of life across multiple decades.
What it does poorly
Day-to-day predictions. Material specifics. Some Western practitioners find the determinism uncomfortable; Vedic is less hand-wavy about timing than Western.
A House Call reading puts all three traditions on one chart and shows where they agree and where they do not. For why a Western and a Vedic chart can name different signs for the same Sun, see why the charts disagree.
