What it is
BaZi (literally "eight characters") is the Chinese system of fate analysis. Your birth moment yields four pillars (year, month, day, hour), each with a stem and a branch chosen from a cycling 60-element calendar.
Day Master
The day stem is your Day Master: the core elemental signature of who you are. There are 10: five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) in yin and yang flavours. One Day Master might be Ji (Yin Earth: "garden earth"); another Wu (Yang Earth: "mountain earth").
Element balance
The other seven characters give you the element balance of your chart. If you're a Water Day Master with strong Fire in your chart, Fire is your wealth element (water controls fire, hence wealth is what you control). If you have weak Metal as a Water DM, you need teachers and mentors (Metal nourishes Water, so Metal is your resource).
Luck pillars (10-year cycles)
Every 10 years your chart enters a new luck pillar. Some pillars structurally support your Day Master; others drain it. This is where BaZi shines: it tells you which decade brings what texture of life.
What it does well
Decade-level life shape. Wealth, career, marriage timing. Which 10-year window is "the building decade" vs "the harvest decade."
What it does poorly
Personality nuance, partnership compatibility (it has tools, but Western is better for synastry), spiritual or hidden-life themes.
A House Call reading puts all three traditions on one chart and shows where they agree and where they do not. For why a Western and a Vedic chart can name different signs for the same Sun, see why the charts disagree.
