What a house is

The houses are a 12-fold division of the sky at your moment of birth, anchored to your ascendant (the eastern horizon). Where a planet sits by sign tells you how it expresses; where it sits by house tells you where in your life it shows up.

The 12 houses

1. 1st (self): your body, your presentation, how you meet the world. Planets here are part of your visible identity.
2. 2nd (values, money): what you own, what you value, your relationship with material life.
3. 3rd (mind, siblings): immediate environment, communication, learning, short journeys.
4. 4th (home, roots): family of origin, your inner emotional foundation, the place you call home.
5. 5th (creativity, romance, children): what you give birth to (works, kids, play, joy).
6. 6th (work, health, routine): daily craft, service, the body's habits.
7. 7th (partnership): long-term one-to-one relationships, marriage, business partners.
8. 8th (depth, shared resources): inheritance, intimacy, transformation, what's hidden.
9. 9th (higher mind, travel): philosophy, foreign cultures, publishing, the big questions.
10. 10th (career, public identity): what you're known for, vocation, public reputation.
11. 11th (friends, networks): groups, communities, hopes, the future.
12. 12th (unconscious, solitude): the hidden self, dreams, retreat, what's behind the curtain.

How to use this

If you see "Saturn in 9H Gemini" in your reading: Saturn (discipline) is the energy, Gemini (mind, communication) is the flavour, 9th house (long-arc learning, philosophy) is the life-area. So that placement is about disciplined long-arc learning and teaching.

A House Call reading puts all three traditions on one chart and shows where they agree and where they do not. For why a Western and a Vedic chart can name different signs for the same Sun, see why the charts disagree.
