The 12 signs at a glance

Each sign combines an element (fire, earth, air, water) and a modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Both layers matter when reading a chart.

The four elements

• Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): initiating energy, drive, will, identity-as-action.
• Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): body, material, structure, the slow building of things that last.
• Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): mind, language, social connection, ideas in motion.
• Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feeling, intuition, the unconscious, the depths.

The three modalities

• Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): starters. Initiate, lead, begin.
• Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): sustainers. Hold position, build durability, refuse to flinch.
• Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): adapters. Change, translate, connect.

How to use this

Element + modality predicts a lot. Cardinal Fire (Aries) starts things impulsively. Fixed Fire (Leo) holds the spotlight. Mutable Fire (Sagittarius) chases the next thing. Cardinal Earth (Capricorn) builds slowly and durably. Fixed Earth (Taurus) holds and grounds. Mutable Earth (Virgo) refines and adapts.

When you read a chart, every placement carries both its element and its modality, and the two together usually tell you most of what you need.
